Xiang-Wei Liu was born in Chongqing municipality in August of 1984.

He received his B. Sc in 2006 at Shaanxi University of Technology, M. Sc. in 2009 at Shaanxi Normal University with Prof. Bao-Lin Li and then Ph.D in 2012 at Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences with Prof. Jian Sun, working on the design, synthesis and application of novel Lewis base organocatalysts in asymmetric hydrosilylation of beta-amino nitroolefins and epimines.

In Septerber 2012 he moved to the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking Univeristy as a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Zhang-Jie Shi, where he worked on the regioselective C-H functionalization of thiazole derivatives, during his time he successfully applied for the grant from China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.

In May 2015 he undertook further postdoctoral studies at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (Institut Català d'Investigació Química, ICIQ) as a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Ruben Martin where he developed new synthetic strategies for C-B and C-Si bond-forming reactions from inert C-F bond cleavage. During his time at ICIQ, he has successfully applied for the prestigious Marie Curie Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (MSCA).

In March 2018 he joined the School of Life Science and Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University as an associate professor. His current research focuses on the development of methodologies toward the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients. He is now supported by the grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China, Department of Science & Technology of Sichuan Province and the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities
